Als Kind begegnete Kazuma Souma seinem Großvater, der, wie Kyou heutzutage, mit dem Fluch des Katzengeistes geschlagen war, nur ein einziges Mal. Der alte Mann war von der Familie völlig isoliert und auch Kazuma wich bei dieser Begegnung vor ihm zurück, weil er sich aufgrund der Geschichten über den Fluch vor ihm fürchtete. Weil sein Großvater kurz darauf verschied, machte er sich noch lange Zeit Vorwürfe wegen seines Verhaltens und seinen späteren Entschluss, Kyou bei sich aufzunehmen, beeinflusste dies maßgeblich mit.
