Totosai ist ein alter und gebrechlich wirkender Dämonen-Waffenschmied, der mithilfe seines Stabes Feuer speien kann und immer auf einer fliegenden dreiäugigen Kuh reitet.
Er war ein guter Freund von Inuyashas Vater, Inu no Taishou (dt. Herr der Hunde) und schmiedete aus dessen Fangzähne die magischen Schwerter Tessaiga (jap.: Tetsusaiga 鉄砕牙, dt.: „eiserner Fangzahn“) und Tenseiga (jap.: 天生牙, dt.: „unsterblicher Fangzahn“). Von ihm wurde er auch beauftragt, Inuyasha in der Handhabung von Tessaiga zu unterweisen.
Während Totosai Inuyasha ständig kritisiert und unhöflich belehrt, fürchtet er sich vor dessen Halbbruder Sesshoumaru. Bei Gefahr macht er sich gerne aus dem Staub.
