Unwissentlich wird der behandelnde Arzt der Mitarbeiter der Nereid-Zweigstelle von Kamchatka bei einem Gespräch zwischen ihm und seiner Krankenschwester belauscht. Von niemand geringeren als Tsutomu Hanaoka, der gerade die Ergebnisse der alljährlichen Vorsorgeuntersuchung abholen wollte. Obwohl er sie nicht sieht, interpretiert er die Thematik ihres Gespräches dahingehend, dass Gloria einen bösartigen Tumor hat, der nicht mehr entfernt werden kann und sie nur noch eine Woche zu leben hat.
