Hagal ist ein Veteran unter den Sezan, den Leibwächtern der Königin. Er rekrutierte Ial, indem er ihn mit einem ordentlichen Batzen Gold von seiner Familie loskaufte und bildete ihn aus. Damit rettete er zwar Ials notleidender Mutter das Leben, entriss ihr gleichzeitig aber auch ihren Sohn, weswegen er ihm gegenüber ambivalente Gefühle hat. Als Sezan respektiert er ihn jedoch uneingeschränkt, da er sich als Inbegriff von Pflichtgefühl und Pflichterfüllung präsentiert. In Disput geraten die beiden, wenn Ial sich doch einmal in die Geschicke anderer einmischt, was Hagal als gefährliche Sentimentalität wertet.
