Yaeko Ootsuka gehört zu vier älteren Personen (neben ihr noch Satou Oitarou, Takeko Hirosawa und Tatsu Takemura), die es sich üblicherweise auf ihrer Stammbank vor dem Geschäft von Tatsu Takemura gemütlich machen und dann den neuesten Tratsch und Klatsch erzählen. Darunter fällt selbstverständlich alles absonderliche, was nicht ihrer Norm entspricht, sei es also extravagante Personen wie Megumi Shimizu oder die ungewöhnlichen Todesfälle die in letzter Zeit in Sotoba drastisch zugenommen haben. Darüber zu diskutieren, woher die Krankheit kommen kann oder wie man sie eindämmen könnte, kommt ihnen allerdings erst gar nicht in den Sinn, eher wird man das Gefühl nicht los als würde ihnen die ganze Sache gar nichts angehen.
