Atsuko, von der Yasumori-Hauptfamilie, macht sich große Sorgen um Tokujiro, von der Nebenfamilie, den nun die selbe Krankheit heimgesucht hat, wie alle seine verstorbenen Verwandten, weshalb sie mit ihm umgehend zu Toshio Ozaki geht. Auf den Rat von Toshio ist er aber alles andere als erpicht, wer soll denn in der Zwischenzeit seinen buddhistischen Altar pflegen, Toshio indes, glaubt mehr daran, ihm wurde diese ablehnende Haltung von einem Shiki eingeimpft.
