Zwar ist er ein Spieler Ryonans, aber nur ein Einwechselspieler, der nur dann eingewechselt wird, wenn eine Auswechslung unausweichlich ist. Als Center kann er mit Jun Uozumi, dem Kapitän der Mannschaft, der auch gleichzeitig einer der besten Center ist, die es gibt, nicht konkurrieren. Entsprechend auffällig ist es, wenn Uozumi den Platz verlässt, denn unterm Korb ist Sugadaira längst nicht so stark wie sein Kapitän.
