Die Gum-Gum-Frucht, die Luffy verspeist hatte, gehörte eigentlich Shanks. Trotzdem werden die beiden Männer gute Freunde. Shanks verliert seinen linken Arm, als er Luffy vor einem Monsterfisch rettet. Anschließend trennen sich ihre Wege und Shanks fährt wieder auf das Meer hinaus; zum Abschied schenkt er Luffy seinen geliebten Strohhut, den er aber eines Tages von ihm zurückhaben möchte.

Shanks hat zusammen mit Buggy seine Lehre auf dem Schiff des Piratenkönigs Gold Roger verbracht. Heute ist er neben Whitebeard einer der vier Kaiser, welche die »Neue Welt« beherrschen. Shanks hat zwar von keiner Teufelsfrucht gegessen, besitzt aber sehr viel »Haki«, was ihn zu einem der stärksten Piraten des jetzigen Zeitalters macht.
