Sugiyama war einst in der selben Situation wie Akagi und spielte in einer Mannschaft, in der er der einzig gute Spieler war. Nachdem sein Team besser wurde, konnte er in seinem dritten Jahr seine Fähigkeiten unter Beweis stellen, weswegen man ihn auch als guten Spieler bemerkt hat. Dank diesem Jahr, wo auf ihn viele renommierte Schulen aufmerksam wurden, spielt er inzwischen für Shintai; diese Mannschaft ist in ganz Japan für ihre Stärke bekannt.
