Sanae Tanabe ist die Mutter von Makoto und wird von diesem regelrecht verachtet. Grund dafür ist die Tatsache, dass Sanae nach dem Selbstmord ihres Mannes vor elf Jahren die Familie verließ und in eine andere Stadt zog. Makoto blieb bei seiner Großmutter zurück. Den Grund dafür hat Makoto bis jetzt nicht erfahren und geht davon aus, dass beide Elternteile an der Entführung beteiligt waren. Mittlerweile hat Sanae wieder geheiratet und lebt glücklich mit ihrem Mann, Masato Kaibara, zusammen.
