Wie eine Porzellanpuppe verbringt Hinoki den größten Teil des Tages stumm und reglos auf einem Stuhl in ihrem Krankenzimmer. Ihr fehlen sämtliche Fähigkeiten, die einen Menschen normalerweise auszeichnen, sie kann weder sprechen noch gestikulieren, sie lacht nicht und zeigt auch sonst keine Emotionen. Nicht einmal über Körpergeruch verfügt sie, lediglich ein verstörendes, versteinertes Lächeln tritt von Zeit zu Zeit auf ihre Züge. Der hirngeschädigte neue Patient Takumi Ogi sieht sie gelegentlich in Visionen, in denen sie vom Direktor des Krankenhauses missbraucht wird.

Tatsächlich ist Hinoki, die in Wahrheit Midori Kasuga heißt, Opfer der Versuche des Krankenhausdirektors, sie zu einem Ersatz für seine verstorbene Frau Hinoki zu machen. Dazu lässt er sie ständig deren alten Kleider tragen und misshandelt und vergewaltigt sie. Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich, dass ihre emotionale Abstumpfung auf diesen traumatischen Erlebnissen beruht. »Hinoki-Midori« ist darüber hinaus vermutlich die echte Tochter der toten Hinoki und somit die Stieftochter des Direktors, was dessen Absicht, sie als Ersatz für seine Frau zu verwenden, noch bestärkt. Wie ihre mutmaßliche Mutter war sie anfangs selbst noch Pflegerin im Krankenhaus.
