Akesato ist eine Geisha und arbeitet in Shimabara, dem Freudenviertel von Kyoto, in einem Geishahaus. Sie ist die Mätresse von Yamanami Keisuke, dem Vize-Kommandeur der Shinsengumi. Eigentlich steht sie auf der Seite der Choshu-Rebellen, die das Shogunat stürzen wollen, und kämpft gelegentlich als Ninja für sie. Dennoch hat sie sich in Yamanami verliebt.

Akesato ist eine Ausländerin und hat eigentlich blonde Haare, diese versteckt sie allerdings unter einer Perücke, um als Japanerin zu wirken.

Der Charakter basiert auf seinem gleichnamigen historischem Vorbild, allerdings war die echte Akesato weder Ninja noch Ausländerin.
