Kurata ist ein professioneller Go-Spieler mit dem Rang eines 6. Dans. Er ist ein weltbekannter Go-Spieler und man erwartet viel von ihm. Nach nur zwei Jahren des Go-Spielens unter Aufsicht eines Go-Profis, der die Rolle seines Lehrers übernahm, schaffte er es ein professioneller Go-Spieler zu werden. Kurata ist fest entschlossen mindestens einen Titel zu gewinnen. Er fürchtet Spieler die einen niedrigeren Rang als er haben mehr, als Spieler die einen höheren haben, deswegen achtet er sehr auf die Neuankömmlinge in der Welt des professionellen Gos, da sie stärker als er werden könnten und somit eine Gefahr für ihn darstellen würden.
