Da Shiberus Eltern gestorben sind, hat sie keine andere Möglichkeit, als bei ihrem Onkel und ihrer Tante unter zu kommen. Diese sind jedoch keine sonderlich herzlichen Pflegeeltern und im Austausch für das schöne Geld für alles zu haben. So muss Shiberu, die auch so unter ihrer Blindheit leidet, noch mehr Leid ertragen, was ihren Onkel allerdings herzlich wenig interessiert. Er scheint sie als Geldquelle zu sehen, da sie wegen Schönheit schon gefragt sein könnte, in der Männerwelt, oder, wenn nicht das, einfach nur als Belastung.
