Die Nachricht, dass er bald sterben soll, trifft Steel sehr; bei seinem Alter ist es zwar nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass er nicht mehr allzu lange zu leben hat, doch kann er sich vom Leben noch nicht einfach verabschieden. Bereits jetzt hat er künstliche Organe, doch diese verlieren ihre Wirkung in gut einer Woche, weswegen es scheinbar aussichtslos scheint, das eigene Leben noch zu verlängern. Doch ihm bietet sich dann eine Möglichkeit; durch eine Apparatur von Doktor Changer kann er sein Gehirn in den Körper eines anderen Menschen transferieren lassen. Platziert er sein Gehirn also in einem jüngeren Körper, verlängert er automatisch sein Leben.
