Als König Francesco aus Balgogne mit seinen Truppen in Vanessas Heimat Arleon einmarschiert, tötet er ihren Mann, den König, und lässt überhaupt nur wenige am Leben, alles Frauen, die er als Kriegsgefangene mit nach Balgogne zurück nimmt. Als die Königin dort ihre Tochter Beatrice wiedersieht, deren Heirat mit Francesco eigentlich den Frieden zwischen beiden Völkern garantieren sollte, keimt ein Hoffnungsschimmer in ihr auf, der aber gleich wieder verfliegt, weil Beatrice sie mitleidlos an ihren Herrscher ausliefert.
