Durch die Adern Tomkins fließt das Blut der Merrow, wie bei allen Bewohnern der Insel der Merrow, woher er stammt, was ihn zu einem Halbmerrow macht. Schon seit langer Zeit dient seine Familie dem Blue Knight Earl, weswegen er Edgar anbietet, ihm zu dienen, wenn er ihm beweisen könnte, dass er es wirklich ist, da schon viele andere Leute sich als Blue Knight Earl ausgegeben hatten. Im Gegensatz zu Edgars anderem Diener Raven ist Tomkins deutlich umgänglicher und gesprächiger, so steht er Edgar immer wieder mit einem guten Rat zur Seite.
