Im Tokyo des Jahres 2020 steht Mako im 3. Jahr der Highschool und damit kurz vor den in sechs Monaten anstehenden Aufnahmeprüfungen für die Universität. Im Gegensatz zu ihrer technikbegeisterten Freundin Hiromi fehlt ihr die Motivation, den ganzen Berg von Lernstoff anzugehen, weil sie noch nicht so recht weiß, wohin sie ihr Lebensweg führen soll. Ein Gespräch mit ihrem Vater öffnet ihr die Augen für ihre eigene Zukunft – etwas, dass nur sie für die Menschen tun und das keine Maschine ihnen abnehmen kann, die in dieser Zeit zu einer Alltäglichkeit geworden sind.
