Alex Gortlem ist der Kommandant der Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, einem US-Militärflugplatz in der japanischen Präfektur Yamaguchi. Er hat einen Sohn mit Toshiko, seiner japanischen Frau, die aber nicht mit ihm zusammen auf dem Militärgelände lebt. Er ist immer wieder hin und her gerissen zwischen den Verpflichtungen seines Amtes und seiner Familie. Wohl auch aus diesem Grund hat er sich MacAbel angeschlossen, der einen Putsch plant, um Japan endgültig dem Einflussbereich der Amerikaner zu entziehen, denn dann könnte Alex endlich in Frieden mit seiner Familie zusammenleben.
