Mashiba ist ein ehemaliger Insei, der es mit Glück durch die Pro-Prüfung schaffte, obwohl er bei weitem nicht so gut ist wie andere Inseis. Er ist der Schüler von Mizokuchi Hiroshi (9.Dan). Bei seinen ehemaligen Insei-Kollegen ist er unbeliebt, da er immer mit seinem Status als Profi angibt, wenn er diese sieht. Er scheint es insbesondere auf Shinichiro Isumi abgesehen zu haben, da dieser im Einstufungssystem der Inseis im japanischen Go-Institut seit langem Erster ist, aber dennoch Probleme mit der Pro-Prüfung hat.
