Seit Generationen wird in seinem Dorf ein Ritual praktiziert, um den Berggott milde zu stimmen und für eine reiche Ernte zu sorgen, bei dem ihm ein Kind geopfert wird. Diesmal obliegt es dem Dorfvorsteher, der Familie von Ai die Kunde zu überbringen. Zweifel an dem Nutzen des Rituals trägt er keine und sieht die Wahl deshalb eher als Ehre an denn als grausames Schicksal. Sentarou glaubt indes, dass die Wahl nicht ganz zufällig auf Ai fiel, die im Dorf als böser Geist betrachtet wird.
