Nachdem Kirito den Eingang des Weltenbaumes betreten hat, stellen sich ihm diese Wächter in den Weg. Alleine sind sie recht harmlos, zumindest für erfahrenere Spieler, doch sie treten in einer schier endlosen Menge an, sodass es für einen einzigen Spieler praktisch unmöglich ist, ihnen beizukommen und sämtliche Angriffe abzuwehren. Dazu wächst ihre Anzahl fortlaufend und für eine besiegte Wache kommen gleich zwei und mehr hinterher. Die Wächter gibt es zudem in zwei Varianten, einmal die Nahkampfvariante, die mit einem Schwert ausgerüstet ist sowie die Fernkampfvariante, die mit Bögen bewaffnet sind.
