Nicolas war einmal Botschafter in Österreich, doch als die Königin von Österreich, Maria Theresia, eine Beschwerde über seine unsolide Lebensweise aussprach, wurde er kurzerhand als Botschafter abgelöst und verschwand danach aus Österreich.
Jahre später, als Louis XVI König von Frankreich ist, taucht er plötzlich in den Kreisen der kleinen Adeligen auf und trifft auf die adoptierte Jeanne Valois und wirft ein Auge auf sie.
Nicolas ist ein Mensch, der sehr leicht beeinflussbar ist und seine Verbindung zu Jeanne führt dazu, dass er ebenso skrupellos zu Handeln beginnt wie sie und in ihren Spielchen nach Macht bereitwillig mitmacht.
