Joyu ist ein gebändigter Yoma-Geist (Hinman) und dient Keiki. Ein Hinman hat die Fähigkeit Menschen besondere Kräfte zu verleihen, wenn er sich mit ihnen verbindet. Auf Anweisung von Keiki verbindet er sich mit Yoko Nakajima, um ihr sein Geschick der Kampfkunst zu leihen. Später leiht er ihr auch die Gabe, die fremde Sprache der zwölf Königreiche zu beherrschen.
Zuerst, als sich der Hinman in den Körper von Yoko einnistet, übernimmt er von ihr Besitz und kontrolliert ihren Körper. Später zieht er sich so tief in sie zurück, dass Yoko ihn überhaupt nicht mehr wahrnimmt.
