Recht schnell kristallisiert sich heraus, dass Sakai ein ausgezeichneter Torwart ist, mit dem Kikumoto nicht wirklich mithalten kann, weswegen er seine Stammposition schnell an ihn abtreten muss. Dennoch nimmt er es sehr sportlich und versucht in den wenigen Momenten, in denen er für Sakai spielen darf, für sein Team da zu sein.
