Zu Beginn hat Phoenix gerade seine Ausbildung zum Rechtsanwalt unter Mia Fey abgeschlossen und muss in seinem ersten Fall die Unschuld seines Klienten Larry Butz beweisen. Eigentlich wird ein Mordfall keinem Anfänger anvertraut, aber er sieht sich verpflichtet ihm zu helfen, da Larry ein alter Schulfreund von Phoenix und einer der Gründe für seine Karriere als Rechtsanwalt ist.
Obwohl er meist ziemlich verplant ist und vor Gericht sehr oft improvisieren muss, ist er dafür bekannt, selbst die hoffnungslosesten Fälle noch herumzudrehen, die Unschuld seiner Klienten zu beweisen und nebenbei meist noch den wahren Mörder zu finden. Er ist immer zu hundert Prozent von der Unschuld seiner Klienten überzeugt und setzt alles daran diese auch zu beweisen.
