Der erste Engel der Tokyo-3, 15 Jahre nach dem »Second Impact«, bedroht zwingt das Militär dazu, sich seine Machtlosigkeit einzugestehen, nachdem deren stärkste Waffe, die N2-Bombe, keine Wirkung zeigt. Man gestattet Ikari Gendo, die Situation mit seinen Methoden zu lösen. Diese sehen Ikari Shinji, Gendos Sohn, als Piloten eines neuen, Sachiel in Größe ebenbürtigen, Kampfroboters vor.

Sachiel ist vor allem für den Nahkampf ausgerüstet, aber nicht darauf beschränkt. Seine Fähigkeiten hat er während der Attacken des Militär verbessern können und stellt für den unerfahrenen Shinji einen ernst zu nehmenden Gegner da.
