Arnold Ecklund ist der Besitzer des Gasthause in Renos, in das Lawrence und Horo einkehren. Als ein Mann von fortgeschrittenem Alter bleibt Arnold gegenüber seinen Gästen sehr zurückhaltend. Lawrence lässt sich jedoch von Arnolds rauer Schale nicht beirren und verwickelt in immer wieder in Gespräche. Bald schon erzählt Arnold ihm bei einem Krug heißem Wein, dass er schon seit Jahren von einer Pilgerreise gen Süden träumt. Außerdem scheint ihn irgendetwas mit der Händlerin Abe, die auch bei ihm logiert, zu verbinden.
