Valentine de Villefort ist die Tochter aus der ersten Ehe von Gérard de Villefort. Die Beziehung zu ihrer neuen Mutter Héloïse de Villefort ist äußerst schlecht, da diese ihren eigenen Sohn Edouard in den Mittelpunkt stellen will. Valentine ist bei diesem Vorhaben die verhasste Konkurrentin und wird deshalb von ihrer Stiefmutter soweit es geht isoliert. Das ist auch einer der Gründe, warum sie sich um ihren invaliden Großvater Noirtier de Villefort kümmert. Dieser ist nun ihre engste Bezugsperson innerhalb der Familie und sie verbindet ein beiderseitiges Vertrauensverhältnis.

Charakterlich ist Valentine eine gutmütige, schüchterne Person, die sich stets zurückhält und so auch nichts gegen die arrangierte Verlobung mit Franz d’Epinay unternimmt, an der beide von ihnen kein Interesse haben.
