Akira selbst ist im Anime nicht, bzw. nur als Gedankenbild Tetsuos zu sehen. Seinen Ursprung hat Akira zwar als realer Mensch, übrig geblieben sind jedoch nur Artefakte seines Körpers, konserviert in Reagenzgläsern um für zukünftige wissenschaftliche Technologien genutzt zu werden. Dennoch gelingt es dem in Einzelteilen zerlegten Körper wieder eine Einheit zu bilden und damit seine zerstörerische Kraft zu entfalten.
