Rübe begegnet Sophie Hatter am Anfang ihrer Reise durch das Niemandsland. Nachdem Sophie ihn eigentlich mehr aus Spaß darum bittet, ihr ein Haus zu suchen, führt die Vogelscheuche sie zu Howls Schloss. Seitdem begleitet Rübe Sophie und erscheint immer in wichtigen Situationen an ihrer Seite.
In Wahrheit ist er der verwandelte Prinz eines benachbarten Landes, dessen Fluch nur mittels eines Kusses, der aus wahrer Liebe resultiert, gebrochen werden kann.
