Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded after the success of the film “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” by the predecessor studio Topcraft.

The studio has been producing anime films since 1985, which, with few exceptions, break new commercial records and also enjoy great attention outside Japan (e.g. “Princess Mononoke” is one of the best-known anime films in German-speaking countries and “Spirited Away” is the first anime film to win an Oscar). The studio’s films often have a moral message. The film “Grave of the Fireflies”, for example, is an unsparing anti-war film, but topics such as environmental pollution and the displacement of nature through industrialisation are also often critically addressed.

Typical for the studio is the reduction of computer technology in the production of the films. In contrast to the majority of animation studios, traditional methods are still used and the films are still drawn by hand. The music is mostly composed by Joe Hisaishi.

Hayao Miyazaki, who is considered one of the most talented animation directors of all time, became world-famous through the studio.

In August 2014, it was announced that the production of animated films would cease for the time being, as virtually all of the staff in this department had retired. In May 2017, it was announced that a new production department was being set up and new employees were being sought. The aim is to produce new feature-length films.

Under the direction of Gorou Miyazaki, the first full 3D CGI film was produced, titled “Earwig and the Witch”.

Studio Ghibli ist ein japanisches Animationsstudio, das nach dem Erfolg des Filmes »Nausicaä aus dem Tal der Winde« des Vorgängerstudios Topcraft gegründet wurde.

Das Studio produziert seit 1985 Animefilme, welche mit wenigen Ausnahmen neue kommerzielle Rekorde sprengen und auch außerhalb Japans große Aufmerksamkeit genießen (so ist z. B. »Prinzessin Mononoke« einer der bekanntesten Animefilme im deutschsprachigen Raum und »Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland« ist der erste Animefilm, welcher einen Oscar gewann). Die Filme des Studios besitzen dabei oftmals eine moralische Botschaft. So ist der Film »Die letzten Glühwürmchen« ein schonungsloser Antikriegsfilm, aber auch Themen wie Umweltverschmutzung und die Verdrängung der Natur durch Industrialisierung werden öfters kritisch thematisiert.

Kennzeichnend für das Studio ist die Reduzierung von Computertechnik bei der Herstellung der Filme. Im Gegensatz zur Mehrzahl der Animationsstudios werden so weiterhin traditionelle Methoden angewandt, die Filme werden stets noch von Hand gezeichnet. Die Musik wird zumeist von Joe Hisaishi komponiert.

Weltbekannt durch das Studio wurde Hayao Miyazaki, der als einer der begabtesten Animationsregisseure aller Zeiten gilt.

Im April 2005 trennte sich das Unternehmen von Tokuma Shoten Publishing, von dem man 1999 temporär aufgekauft worden war.

Im August 2014 wurde bekannt gegeben, dass die Produktion von Animationsfilmen vorerst eingestellt wird, da so gut wie alle Mitarbeiter dieser Abteilung in Pension gingen. Im Mai 2017 wurde bekannt gegeben, dass eine neue Produktionsabteilung auf die Beine gestellt wird und neue Mitarbeiter gesucht werden. Ziel ist es, neue abendfüllende Filme zu produzieren.

Unter der Leitung von Gorou Miyazaki wurde der erste komplette 3D-CGI-Film mit dem Titel »Aya to Majo« produziert.
