Uno dei 4 grandi classici della letteratura cinese, tradotto in numerose lingue e con una serie di rielaborazioni non solo in campo letterario, ma anche in quei settori che riguardano i mezzi di comunicazione di massa come film, telefilm, videogiochi anime e manga. Molti sono stati, infatti, i mangaka che si sono cimentati nel riproporre le avventure di Son Goku. E' però l’opera di Katsuya Terada che probabilmente, più di tutte, riesce a recuperare il ruolo autenticamente anarchico e la sete di libertà assoluta dell’eroe del romanzo, riscoprendo i lati più dissacratori del Viaggio in Occidente.
