Die Geschichte handelt von einem jungen Mädchen namens Yawara Inokuma, das sich nach einem normalen Leben sehnt. Jedoch hat ihr Großvater Kanō Inokuma andere Pläne für sie. Er ist sehr streng und trainiert Yawara in Judo, mit dem Ziel die Meisterschaft in Japan und die Goldmedaille bei den Olympischen Spielen zu gewinnen. Durch den großen Druck ihres Großvaters, hat sie bald eine Abneigung gegen Judo und vermeidet es diesen Sport auszuüben, obwohl sie darin sehr begabt ist. Doch langsam fängt sie an zu begreifen, warum ihr Großvater Judo so liebt und beginnt dies ebenfalls zu schätzen.
