Umi a seize ans et fréquente le lycée Kônan. Son père, marin, n’est pas rentré à la maison depuis que son bateau a disparu en mer. Umi croit encore qu’un jour, il reviendra, et c’est pour cela qu’elle garde impeccable la maison familiale sur la Colline aux Coquelicots. Souvent à l'étranger, sa mère photographe la laisse se débrouiller avec sa jeune sœur, son petit frère, et les étudiants à qui elle loue des chambres pour joindre les deux bouts. Malgré ce contexte familial déjà bien difficile, Umi doit de plus faire face aux bouleversements qui sont en train de naître au lycée. Entre révoltes et débats de société lancés par le club de journalisme, mais aussi et surtout sa vie sentimentale, comment Umi pourra-t-elle trouver son équilibre ?
