Las décadas de 1850 y 1860 fueron cruciales para Japón. Después de 250 años de cerrazón absoluta al exterior, en 1854 el comodoro Perry de la armada de los EEUU llegó con su flotilla de barcos de guerra al país para tratar de conseguir un tratado de comercio favorable a sus intereses. En ese momento, el shogunato estaba en su época de más profundo declive y el sistema amenazaba con venirse abajo al más mínimo contratiempo (de hecho, en poco más de una década se acabó derrocando el shogunato y Japón entró en su frenética etapa de modernización de la época Meiji. En esta obra se compara al shogunato con un gran cerezo que hay en el jardín de uno de los personajes: ese árbol que proporciona tan agradable sombra (de aquí el título de la obra), protegiendo a quienes se encuentran debajo de él, ha vivido ya 250 años, pero el interior de su tronco está podrido y carcomido por los parásitos, con lo que un simple empujón bastaría para que se desplomase. La metáfora del potencial desplome simboliza, el estado del shogunato en la época en que transcurre la acción de esta obra.

Osamu Tezuka racconta la tumultuosa seconda metà del 1800 giapponese attraverso gli occhi di due uomini molto diversi: il fedele samurai Manjiro Ibuya, legato alle tradizioni, e il medico Ryoan Tezuka (antenato dell’autore), aperto alle innovazioni occidentali. La loro rivalità, che diventerà con il tempo amicizia, caratterizza una delle opere più significative del leggendario maestro.
