Die 9-jährige Maruko ist faul, planlos und kommt normalerweise auch zu spät zur Schule. Ganz im Gegensatz zu ihr ist ihre ältere Schwester immer ordentlich und elegant. Beide müssen sich allerdings einen Raum teilen. Maruko versucht, wie viele anderen Kinder auch, Hausaufgaben und sonstige lästige Pflichten möglichst zu vermeiden. Außerdem zieht sie ihren Vorteil aus ihrem senilen geistesabwesenden Großvater, der leicht ausgetrickst werden kann und streitet oft mit ihrer Schwester. Trotzdem meint sie es immer gut und versucht ihr Bestes.
