In the 2070’s, mankind has established a mining base on the moon and dispatched men to explore Mars. The first manned mission to Jupiter is also in progress. As a result of this interplanetary activity, space debris is increasing and its collection has become a new profession. In the 1st volume of Makoto Yukimura’s Planetes, we meet Yuri, Hachimaki, and Fee. Hachimaki’s dream is to buy his own spaceship. He thinks he can earn money quickly by joining the crew of the first expedition to Jupiter. Yuri lost his wife in a space travel accident, and became a debris collector out of a desperate desire to discover some remembrance of her. Fee takes great pride in her profession and works very hard, having left behind her husband and young son on earth. In a dark and cruel universe, each of these space junkers grapples with his or her own personal problems.

Das Jahr 2075. Der Weltraum ist voll von allem möglichen Schrott: ausrangierte Satelliten, Bruchstücke von Raumschiffen oder Raumstationen. All diese Reste stellen eine potentielle Gefahr für die im Weltraum verkehrenden Raumschiffe dar. Mehrere Teams mit Weltraummüllsammlern wurden gegründet, damit der Müll eingesammelt und der Weltraum gereinigt wird - die Sektion Debris.

Ai Tanabe, eine junge Rekrutin voller Prinzipien und Illusionen, kommt in eines der schlecht angesehenen Teams. Sie lernt dort Menschen voller Zweifel kennen, die aber auch äußerst originell sind.

Anmerkung:
Band 4 wurde, aufgrund seiner Länge, in Amerika und Deutschland in zwei Bände aufgeteilt, weswegen die japanische Ausgabe nur vier Bände umfasst. In Frankreich, Italien und Spanien erschien die Reihe in ihren ursprünglichen vier Bänden.

13 luglio 2068, Yuri è distrutto dalla morte della moglie, avvenuta in seguito a un terribile incidente spazio-aereo. La sua vita diviene cupa e solitaria. Sei anni dopo è diventato un raccoglitore di debris: spazzatura spaziale. Con lui lavorano altre due persone, Hachimaki e Fee, e ognuno dei tre ha uno scopo preciso. Yuri spera di recuperare qualche ricordo della moglie, il giovane Hachimaki vorrebbe comprare un’astronave tutta sua, mentre Fee è orgogliosa del proprio lavoro di netturbina dello spazio, per svolgere il quale ha lasciato marito e figlio a casa, sulla Terra.
