Leviathan (1999)

After a long absence, the young shaman Samizo Kohei returns from the dead with a prophecy of the apocalypse. Or part of him returns, at least - most of his body has been replaced with the transplanted body parts of his former friends, all retaining their distinctive personalities. He returns to his home in Shinjuku, where he works as a psychic surgeon in an unlicensed clinic. Here he serves as the unofficial guardian of the Shinjuku underground, solving paranormal murder mysteries, with the assistance of an assortment of other bizarre mystics and semi-human allies. Meanwhile, the others wonder exactly what Kohei has become, and whether he has returned to prevent the apocalypse, or to initiate it.

Secondo la tradizione biblica il Leviatano sarebbe colui che annuncia la fine del mondo all’alba dell’Apocalisse. Tale sembrerebbe essere la missione del misterioso protagonista di questo manga, Kohei Samizo. 1998: Una spedizione di pace delle forze dell’ONU formata da cinque membri scompare misteriosamente in Cappadocia. Due anni dopo un solo membro di quella spedizione, l’uomo che si fa chiamare Kohei Samizo, fa ritorno. Eppure egli appare radicalmente cambiato... in qualche modo nel suo corpo vivono infatti i suoi quattro compagni di viaggio. Un mondo paranormale come non ne avevamo mai visti prima d’ora, tra esperimenti parascientifici e complotti segreti, dove ogni personaggio nasconde ben piu' di quello che appare...
