Renton ha quattordici anni e pensa di vivere una vita noiosa, in una noiosa cittadina. Vive con suo nonno, dopo che suo padre – un eroe di guerra – è morto, lasciando un vuoto incolmabile. L’unico svago di Renton è “liftare”, uno sport estremo che consiste nel cavalcare l’aria con delle tavole a lievitazione. Non ha nessuna intenzione di finire a lavorare nell’officina meccanica del nonno, anzi il suo sogno è quello di emulare le gesta di Holland, un famoso lifter. I suoi sogni sembrano esaudirsi quando un giorno un enorme robot meccanico, il Nirvash, fa un atterraggio d’emergenza nel cortile dell’officina del nonno, in cerca disperata di riparazioni. Alla sua guida c’è una sua coetanea: la bellissima quanto enigmatica Eureka, e questo incontro cambierà il destino di entrambi.
