Hitokiri Jintetsu, nonostante la giovane età, è un vero maestro nell’arte della spada, tanto da essere considerato uno dei più pericolosi assassini in circolazione. Ma anche lui, come tutti, non è immortale, e la sua fine non sarà opera di un avversario più abile di lui, ma di un gruppo di cani randagi. Sul punto di morte viene tuttavia raccolto e gli viene donato un corpo di legno e acciaio. Riesce a muoversi, ma perde l’uso della parola e comunque si trova ad avere a che fare con il suo nuovo corpo artificiale. Da questo momento iniziata una vita come vagabondo, vagando per il Giappone in cerca di una ragione di vita.
