In der titelgebenden Geschichte Gaki Jigoku reist eine junge Frau auf der Suche nach ihrem Geliebten von einst, zu dem sie vor drei Jahren jeglichen Kontakt verlor, in die kaiserliche Hauptstadt. In den Bergen nahe ihres Zielorts trifft sie jedoch auf die verstorbenen Opfer einer Dürreperiode, deren hungernde Seelen in ihrem Verlangen nach Nahrung wieder fleischliche Gestalt angenommen haben. Ein Mönch aus einem nahegelegenen Tempel eilt der Frau zur Hilfe und schlägt die Geister in die Flucht, doch die Reisende trägt von der Begegnung schwere Bisswunden davon. Zur Genesung geleitet der Mönch sie in den Tempel, wo sich ihr Zustand jedoch nicht bessert …

Anmerkung:
Dieser Titel enthält sieben einzelne Geschichten von Hideshi Hino, die von 1972 bis 1986 in verschiedenen Comicmagazinen veröffentlicht wurden. Der Sammelband erschien im Juni 1987. Fälschlicherweise wurde bisher angenommen, dieser Titel stünde in Verbindung mit dem Manga Kyoufu Jigoku Shoujo beziehungsweise dessen englischsprachigem Release. Dies ist jedoch nicht der Fall.
