Nous sommes en 1582 et le Japon connaît une période de guerre civile suite à la mort du seigneur Oda Nobunaga qui tenta de réunir le pays. En marge des seigneurs et autres samourai, il existe ce que l’on appelle les „Kabuki-mono“, guerriers appréciant particulièrement les accoutrements voyants et les plaisirs de la vie tout en étant des combattants aguerris se battant au rythme de nombreuses batailles. Le héros de cette histoire se prénomme Keiji Maeda et se trouve être l’un de ces Kabuki-mono. Le récit commence quand un groupe de soldat échoue à attraper des chevaux sauvages pour en faire des montures pour les batailles à venir. Un cheval gigantesque s’interpose et libère ses congénères. Keiji décide d’en faire son cheval, à la fois parce qu’il est tombé sous le charme de ce cheval immense mais aussi car il lui convient parfaitement, lui-même mesurant 1m97 ! Le cheval se laissera apprivoiser par Keiji qui n’hésite pas à s’incliner devant lui ou à comparer ses cicatrices faites aux combats avec celles de l’animal. L’histoire narrera ensuite les aventures de Keiji et ses compagnons dans ce Japon en guerre, ses interactions avec les puissants de ce monde et ses nombreuses batailles où nombres de têtes voleront!

Keiji è il più grande kabukimono (persona eccentrica, che ama distinguersi dagli altri nel modo di comportarsi e nell’aspetto, col fine ultimo di imporre la propria volontà sugli altri) mai esistito ed è il nipote di Maeda Toshiie, uno dei più grandi feudatari giapponesi dell’epoca Sengoku (1467-1568). In questo periodo si svolgono grandi battaglie per decidere chi dominerà il Giappone dopo Oda Nobunaga.
