Die Geschichte handelt von Kyōhei, einem Universitätsstudenten, der in einem Dorf aufwuchs, das Figuren vergöttert, die sie Kukuri nennen. Kyōhei gab seine Heimatstadt jedoch auf und zog nach Tokio, um sich ins Universitätsleben zu stürzen. Eines Tages stößt er in der Stadt auf seine jüngere Schwester Utao mit ihrem Kukuri. Von ihr lernt er, dass jemand mit dem Namen Aki aus seinem Heimatdorf nach Tokio geflohen ist (mit seinem Kukuri im Schlepptau) und für ein schreckliches Verbrechen verantwortlich ist, von dem Kyōhei kurz zuvor Zeuge wurde. Kyōhei begreift, dass er dem nicht entkommen kann, was er eigentlich zurücklassen wollte.
