Kioto, 1966. El joven Hamaguchi trabaja en una fábrica de textiles. Cansado de no poder satisfacer su pasión por el dibujo, se despide y se marcha a Tokio. Allí, un estudio de manga le ofrece una oportunidad, al mismo tiempo que descubre la vida nocturna y los ambientes artísticos de la ciudad. Pero el trabajo de ayudante de mangaka es extenuante y Hamaguchi pronto se da cuenta de la dificultad de encontrar tiempo y energía para dedicarse a su propia obra.
Por primera vez, Jiro Taniguchi recuerda sus primeros pasos como mangaka y su juventud en el Tokio de los años 60. Una magnífica historia sobre el aprendizaje, donde toda la delicadeza y elegancia del autor se unen para ilustrar las primeras emociones de la edad adulta.

Hamaguchi, impiegato di un’azienda tessile, si sente diverso da tutti gli altri ragazzi; basti pensare che al circolo sportivo, meta prediletta dei suoi coetanei, il ragazzo preferisce lo zoo, dove passa buona parte del proprio tempo a ritrarre dal vivo gli animali. Ma la sua passione per il disegno è talmente forte da sopportare appena i ristretti confini della vita di provincia, e presto Hamaguchi deciderà di partire per Tokyo, dove finirà per imbattersi in una comunità di professionisti un po' particolare: quella degli autori di fumetto, i mangaka...
