Blurb:
Black Jack is a mysterious and charismatic young genius surgeon who travels the world performing amazing and impossible medical feats. Though a trained physician, he refuses to accept a medical license due to his hatred and mistrust of the medical community’s hypocrisy and corruption. This leads Black Jack to occasional run-ins with the authorities, as well as from gangsters and criminals who approach him for illegal operations.

Black Jack charges exorbitant fees for his services, the proceeds from which he uses to fund environmental projects and to aid victims of crime and corrupt capitalists. But because Black Jack keeps his true motives secret, his ethics are perceived as questionable and he is considered a selfish, uncaring devil. The Black Jack series is told in short stories. Each volume will contain 16-20 stories, each running approximately 20-24 pages in length.

Black Jack is recognized as Osamu Tezuka’s third most famous series, after Astro Boy and Kimba, the White Lion.

Probablemente, la mejor obra del dios de los manga. A través del protagonista de este manga, el autor quiso exhibir el médico que hubiera deseado ser de no haber sido dibujante: un habílisimo cirujano que actúa fuera de los círculos legales porque no está de acuerdo con el papeleo y las jerarquías que imperan en estos últimos, y que aunque cobra cifras astronómicas por curar a sus pacientes más acaudalados, en cambio suele ayudar a los pacientes pobres gratuitamente. El autor aprovecha para hacer un alegato sobre el valor de la propia vida, y el modo en que la atención médica para preservar ésta raramente es prestada en igualdad de condiciones para todos los seres humanos.

Chirurgien sans diplôme opérant dans la clandestinité, personnage ténébreux, génial et hors-la-loi, Black Jack passe sa vie à sauver celle des autres. Tezuka, lui-même médecin, s’exprime à travers son personnage. Chaque nouveau cas est, pour l’auteur, l’occasion de dévoiler un regard acéré, sans concessions sur la nature humaine … et pourtant profondément humaniste, malgré son apparente dureté. Chaque épisode de Black Jack est une fable noire et superbe sur la condition humaine. Here comes the man in black … Considéré comme l’un des chefs-d’oeuvre d’Osamu Tezuka, Black Jack est aussi la série la plus conséquente du fondateur du manga moderne. Depuis sa création, de nombreux auteurs de manga rendent régulièrement hommage à ce personnage mythique : Naoki Urasawa (Monster), Akihito Yoshitomi (Ray) Eiji Ohtsuka et You Kinutani (Leviathan) ou encore Shuho Satô (Say Hello to Black Jack). Un des plus grands classiques du manga, régulièrement adapté en animé (la dernière adaptation en date est une série T.V. diffusée au Japon depuis fin 2004). La lecture de Tezuka rejoint ici ce que les plus grands auteurs ont cherché à atteindre: émouvoir son prochain, le remettre en question et finalement l’inviter à s’élever vers ce qu’il porte en lui de meilleur, de plus juste et de plus haut... De plus humain. Un must à ne pas rater pour tous les amateurs de bandes dessinées et pour les fans de Tezuka!

Il protagonista è un misterioso e abilissimo medico chirurgo senza licenza. Scrive Tezuka: «Il nome Black Jack indica un bicchiere di metallo (una volta di legno), ma ha anche il significato di bandiera pirata, contrassegnata con uno scheletro. Ho scelto questo paragone con i pirati perché il protagonista dell’opera arraffa soldi e taglia a pezzi brutalmente con il bisturi. Non ha attinenza con l’omonimo gioco di carte.» Black Jack si presenta come un cinico e approfittatore, un genio della chirurgia che opera solo per denaro, ma poi è sempre pronto a proteggere e aiutare i deboli e i bisognosi, mettendosi contro i potenti e i meschini.
