Homare Akatsuki ist Vorsitzender des Disziplinarkollegiums und ehemaliger Schülerratspräsident an einer Eliteschule, der weiß, wie man die an der Spitze manipuliert, notfalls mit dezentem Hinweis auf seine Herkunft. Als Suguru Ikushima, sein ehemaliger Freund aus Grundschultagen, an seine Schule wechselt, lässt er sich von Akatsukis abweisendem Verhalten, der seine mühsam erarbeitete Kontrolle durch Kindheitsgeschichten in Gefahr sieht, nicht beirren. Als Suguru ihn im alten Schulgebäude zur Rede stellt, kommt es zu einem folgenschweren Unfall und Akatsuki wird durch einen Spiegel in eine Parallelwelt namens „Mundus Fabula“ gezogen, wo der mysteriöse Vid ihm erst einmal die „Spielregeln“ erklärt.
