Anfang März des Jahres 1590 soll der Bürgerkrieg zu einem Ende gebracht werden. Dazu muss der widerspenstige Hojo-Clan endgültig besiegt werden. Hierzu erteilt Heerführer Hideyoshi Toyotomi seinem Vasallen Mitsunari Ishida den Befehl, die Festung Oshi anzugreifen. Für diesen Teil des Feldzuges werden ihm etwa 20.000 Soldaten unterstellt. Einige von ihnen sind sogar mit Feuerwaffen ausgerüstet. Die Festung Oshi, auch bekannt als schwimmende Festung, ist von Seen und Reisfeldern umgeben und kann somit nur auf schmalen Wegen erreicht werden. Nagachika Narita stehen als Befehlshaber der Festung für die Verteidigung nur 500 Samurai, einige hundert Bauern und einige Feuerwaffen zur Verfügung. Nachdem die Aufforderung zur Kapitulation abgelehnt wurde, ist der Kampf nicht mehr zu vermeiden.
