Lee In-Jwa is a master of disguise and bluff, having a gift for using people for his purpose. His goal: gain influence in the royal court. To reach his goal, maid Soobin Choi seems to be the perfect tool, as she has a gambling-addict husband at home. With his talent, he shifts the attention of King Sookjong to the lady, so he chooses her as a mistress. A short time later, a son is born, but at court, the rumour spreads it is the son of the gambling-addict husband instead of the king. Desperately, Choi swaps her child with one that has already died of the plague, but the king sees through the farce. Chaos breaks free as everyone searches for the lost son, giving In-Jwa more than enough time to earn more favours.

20 years later: the lost son has now grown up to be a handsome young man named Baek Dae-Gil. Just like In-Jwa, he also has a gift for gambling, bluffing and intrigues. And these gifts shall turn out the be his demise when he stumbles into the big game In-Jwa has worked out for the last 20 years. So now he is nothing more but yet another piece on In-Jwa’s large chess board.

Lee In-Jwa ist Meister der Täuschung und Intrigen, andere Menschen für seine Zwecke zu benutzen und sie gegeneinander auszuspielen, ist sein Lebenselixier. Sein hochgestecktes Ziel: Die Königsfamilie rund um König Sookjong auszuspielen. Für dieses Ziel scheint ihm die junge Hofdame Sookbin Choi, gestraft mit einem spielsüchtigen Ehemann, genau das richtige Werkzeug zu sein. Geschickt macht er den König auf sie aufmerksam und fördert schnell ihre Liebschaft. Nach kurzer Zeit wird ein Sohn geboren und am Hof kommt schnell das Gerücht auf, das Kind sei vom spielsüchtigen Ehemann und nicht vom König. In einer Nacht-und-Nebel-Aktion lässt Choi ihr Kind mit einem von der Seuche getöteten Kind vertauschen, doch der König bemerkt den Betrug. Das Chaos um das Kind nutzt sogleich In-Jwa aus, um seine Vorteile zu sichern.

20 Jahre später: Aus dem Kind von damals ist ein stattlicher junger Mann namens Baek Dae-Gil geworden. Wie In-Jwa besitzt auch er großes Talent für Glückspiel, Intrigen und Betrügereien. Und gerade dieses Talent wird ihm zum Verhängnis, als er unweigerlich in die Geschichte rutscht, die In-Jwa seit dem Treffen mit Dae-Gils Mutter Choi für ihn vorbereitet hat. Denn auch er ist nur eine weitere Figur in In-Jwas großem Schachspiel rund um die königliche Familie.
