Im Alter von 8 Jahren erfährt Takuma, dass er unter einer schweren Herzkrankheit leidet und er jederzeit sterben kann, sobald er ins Erwachsenenalter kommt. Zur selben Zeit lernt er im Krankenhaus Mayu kennen, die gleichaltrige Tochter seines behandelnden Arztes. Obwohl sie von Takumas Krankheit weiß, hält sie das nicht davon ab, ihm ihre ganze Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken. Deshalb verspricht Takuma ihr, dass er sie heiraten wird, sobald sie 20 Jahre alt werden. Doch mit zunehmendem Alter wird immer fragwürdiger, ob er sein Versprechen halten kann.
